Sara Chatwin keelhauls Murray Deaker, live, on his show.
NewstalkZB/Radio Sport, Sunday 12.7.09 1.55 p.m.
The usual litany of grumbling and griping by Murray Deaker on his radio programme today. Today, though, there’s a slight twist to it: he professes to be worried about Graham Henry’s state of mind, because "it’s clear that the All Black coach will be under enormous pressure during the World Cup in 2011"....
We only listened for a few minutes, but we did catch this entertaining spanking administered by the chirpy pop psychologist Sara Chatwin. He had invited her on the show, obviously expecting her to endorse his hare-brained theory that Henry was on the edge of despair. Unfortunately for him, however, Ms. Chatwin took the opportunity to attack the halfwitted and ignorant souls who ring Deaker and his acolyte Wiwwy Wose to grumble and gripe. Poor old Deaker could only keep a surly silence throughout the mauling....
DEAKER: The PRESSURE will be e-NOR-mous in 2011. Oi’ve decided to get someone who KNOWS all about just what that pressure means. Sports psychologist Sara Chatwin, how will Graham Henry handle the HU-U-U-U-UGE pressure that he will be under in 2011?
SARA CHATWIN: [thoughtful, deliberate] I’m a big proponent of preparedness. When I think back to 2007, the tumults of that year, it was an annis horribilis, that year, wasn’t it? I think we saw the dark side of the New Zealand psyche after that quarter-final loss.
[Deaker, baffled, remains silent.]
SARA CHATWIN: As a nation, I think we have to have a look at how we crucify people in our top sports teams. The insane reaction in 2007 was more an indictment of us, I think. It really gave us a look at our dark side.
[Deaker realises this is a criticism of him, but he lacks the wit to respond]
SARA CHATWIN: I mean, look at the idiotic reaction of some people to the All Blacks’ games against France and Italy. I wanted to SLAP those grumblers and complainers. Sportspeople put in an incredible amount of time and effort into their training and preparation, and we need to RESPECT that.
[As she talks, Deaker maintains an icy, angry silence.]
SARA CHATWIN: We really need to look at how we treat our athletes. All I've heard so far is ignorance and resentment.
DEAKER: [through gritted teeth] That’s Sara Chatwin, sports psychologist. ...[STUNNED SILENCE FOR SEVERAL SECONDS].... The Minstrel always has something interesting to say. What have you got for us to day, Minstrel?
[Cue unfunny singer-guitarist...]
