Day of the Dumb Bastards (Sept. 26, 2003)

Morrissey Breen
9/26/03
Is it something to do with the spring equinox? Have these infernal
winds of late actually interfered with the brain patterns of a few
unfortunate broadcasters, cabinet ministers and meathead sports club
CEOs?
Well, how the hell else can you explain the remarkable series of
verbal blunders that occurred on Wednesday 24 September? Whatever the
reason, this is a day that seems destined to go down in this country's
annals of infamy. Let's relive this remarkable, unprecedented,
excruciating triptych of idiocy...
1.)  Kicking off this day of days, veteran right wing zealot, tireless
broadcaster, skirt-chaser and would-be crooner Paul Holmes utters the
following assessment of the United Nations Secretary General: "That
Kofi Annan, I have got to say to you, he has been a very cheeky darkie
overnight. It is all very well giving a darkie that secretary
general's job. We will only take so much, I am sorry.  We will only
take so much. We are not going to be told how to live by a Ghanaian."
Following predictable reactions of disgust and outrage, Holmes spends
the next thirty-six hours offering smarmy, insincere apologies and
assuring us that he is "not a racist" and that he is "a good man."
2.)  Helen Clark's favourite attack dog, a fellow named Trevor
Mallard
, takes it on his learned shoulders to scold Maori for selling
their land to the Maori Land Court in the nineteenth century. An
appalled Professor David Williams, of the University of Auckland law
school, points out that the pressure on Maori from the governments in
the nineteenth century to sell their land was persistent, unethical
and almost irresistible. That such an ignoramus is the minister of
Education is something that "beggars belief", says Professor Williams.
3.)  But it's the CEO of a mud wrestling organisation who comes out
with the absolute doozy of this day of days.  One Mick Watson, a rangy
and dopily earnest Australian dullard, opines that it is time for his
team of mud wrestlers to "pick a fight" with the All Blacks.
"This team are [sic!] challenging the All Blacks for national pride,"
he blithers, "It's realistic. There comes a time when you have to
pick a fight."
But wait! There's more....
"We're not getting cocky or arrogant," he assures the NZ Herald's
Louisa Cleave, "we're getting aspirations behind the jersey."
Whatever this fellow means by the intriguing expression "getting
aspirations behind the jersey" is, alas, never explained. Certainly
Ms Cleave does not have the wit or presence of mind to ask him for any
clarification. Such a bizarre statement would usually be taken as a
joke, of course, but this Watson fellow utters his words with no sign
of a smile or a laugh. Which has the effect, of course, of making
them all the funnier.
THE BREEN CHALLENGE: I will bet a silk pajama that no one else on
this news group is able to point to another day in New Zealand's
history where statements of such offensiveness, ignorance and sheer
hopeless stupidity have been deliberately released to, or inflicted
on, the long-suffering Kiwi public.

I'm assuming that you mean releases/statements made by prominent people
here Morrissey. Otherwise the regular NZ posters in here meet those
criteria of "offensiveness, ignorance and sheer hopeless stupidity" on a
daily basis.

Quite correct, alvey, and a point well made.  I should have inserted
the exception clause "other than when Rick Boyd posts three or more a
day".

Paul Holmes is a gutter dwellng twat and an embarrasment to the country.

While I agree that Mallard is as sharp and verbally sophisticated as a
mallet...
I don't have hell of a lot of sympathy for the Iwi claims to the
foreshore.  For a start, they don't represent Maori opinion since 50% of
Maori agree with the Govt's foreshore solution, 25% want the Crown to
own it, leaving very little room for Maori supporting the Iwi claim that
all of the foreshore is theirs if they wish to claim it.
Also, I think that if I were in the Government, I'd be pretty pissed off
as well - they offer a deal which gives everyone access to the
foreshore, allows Maori customary rights and an avenue through the
Waitangi tribunal to claim for any customary right not explicitly
covered already.  That seems pretty fair to everyone IMO.
The only reason I can see for Iwi to reject this bill is because they
want more than customary rights, they want ownership and to exclude this
right from others. A stance which strikes me as selfish in the extreme
given the highly open nature of the access afforded by the Govt's
current foreshore bill.  It was Maori who said we cannot own the land,
we are merely caretakers - Iwi should live up to that philosophy (as it
seems, the majority of Maori have, given their strong support of Public
domain(50%) or Crown ownership(25%) of the foreshore).
Peter.

Are you saying that the "are" should be an "is"? That's a northen
hemisphere usage that has all but swept the more logical southern
hemisphere usage off the face of the planet.

  1. A child's sleepwear made of pure cotton or a man-made material such as nylon will be more expensive than those made of pure silk, but will definitely feel much better on the skin (in the same way that a silk pyjama set feels!) . Get more interesting details about silk pajamas check out this site.
