National Radio's "The Panel" is really in trouble... (Sept. 13, 2010)

National Radio's "The Panel" is today being hosted by Noelle McCarthy.
She's a bright young thing, but unfortunately she's been saddled with
a couple of hopeless, horrific, humdrum humps from the extreme right
wing, namely Stephen Franks and David Farrar. Predictably, Farrar,
being a disciplined National Party functionary, takes the opportunity
to do a Tony Veitch number on the Post-Primary Teachers Association:
the teachers are striking on Wednesday, he chortles, "because they
can't get free laptops." Noelle giggles winsomely: "N-y-y-yeeesss. Ha
ha ha ha ha!"
Appalled, this writer (i.e., moi) saw fit to send the comely colleen
from Cork the following hurry-up...
Do you think your show is fair or balanced?
Dear Noelle,
David Farrar's jibe about teachers going on strike "because they can't
get free lap-tops" was not only crass and unfunny, it was plain wrong.
It is disturbing to see you have two panellists from the extreme
right, and that you have not contradicted or challenged their views
even once; if we want to hear ignorant, complacent people agreeing
with each other's unexamined, half-baked views, we'd tune into
NewstalkZB or watch Fox News.
Surely National Radio can do better than this.
Yours sincerely,
Morrissey Breen

Noelle is left of Jesus - so they were adequately balanced
As for the strike - close all schools  till the teachers agree to a
pay decrease and severe performance targets
Also - a dress rule needs to be brought in to tidy up the rabble
currently standing in front of our classes

Well done. The lack of balance is appalling. I only heard the early
part of the show where Farrar was in effect saying what a shame it is
for Anderton that the earthquake means that Parker may now win in
Christchurch (but of course we don't really know that (yet) as there
haven't been any real polls . . . ). He then talked about not having
his campaign bus (trailer) any more - with no one in any doubt as to
who he had been campaigning for . . .
I suspect the 'guests' are arranged well in advance and may reflectthe
choice of the normal announcer, but it shows poor management control
by Radio New Zealand

I beg your pardon. If you compare Stephen Franks with ACT he is pretty
well on the left of ACT.
Meanwhile Whaleoil keeps referring to David Farrar as
'pinko' (although I think Whaleoil may say something less
complementary after David compared Whale with Trevor Mallard).

She was, as usual, asleep at the wheel. She never once challenged the
hare-brained statements of Franks or Farrar. Their extreme, ill-
informed statements underwent no public scrutiny.

You know nothing about teaching, do you?

Nothing at all.

I know about the good and the useless that taught me and my children -
in fact - I am an expert on them.
