Breen corresponds with Leighton Smith for a third time.... (Jul. 20, 2005)

Henry Matafoe, a 23-year-old jailed for five years for aggravated
robbery, has been diagnosed with cancer, is wheelchair-bound and has
nine months at most to live. His distraught family is pleading for him
to be released to die at home. He is no threat to anyone.  Surely?
Well, except to the likes of Newstalk ZB hate jock LEIGHTON SMITH, that
is. This morning Smith wasted no time in informing his audience that
calls for compassion for the dying Henry Matafoe were just "political
correctness and welfarism gone mad". When a caller referred to the
dying man as "the gentleman", Smith jumped down his throat: "DON'T call
him a gentleman!"
Smith then went on to sound off for several minutes against the
lily-livered liberal pantywaists who were so misguided as to express
sympathy for Matafoe or his family. Of course this writer (moi) just
had to contact the great man once again, and duly dashed off the
following missive....

Dear Leighton,
Good to hear you coming down hard on crime, even to
the extent of damning a cancer victim ("Don't call him
a gentleman!" as you chided a careless caller this
morning.)
It's pleasing to hear that you are so disgusted at the
violent crime committed in the service station by the
(now dying) man (NOT a gentleman!) last year.
It's especially gratifying in the light of your
sustained public support for the murderer of a
crippled, helpless man last year.  I take it you now
condemn the man who cold-bloodedly shot that cripple
last year, and also the men who sent him there to
carry out that crime.
Could you tell us what it was that brought about your
more compassionate stance for victims of crime?
Yours sincerely,
Morrissey Breen
-----------------------------------------------------
This seemed to rub the great communicator up the wrong way.  A few
minutes after it was sent, Newstalk ZB listeners were treated to this
on-air outburst:
SMITH: [through clenched teeth] I've just read a very strange letter
from a chap called Morrissey. [Reads entire letter in steadily mounting
tone of anger and bewilderment]
What on EARTH are you talking about?
Morrissey, what the HELL are you talking about?  My concern with the
word "gentleman" goes deeper than that, by the way...
(I'll skip Smith's baffling attempt to explain his "gentleman" theory.)
Apparently this Aristotle of the Airwaves, this Colossus of Cogitation,
this Philosphical Phenom had completely forgotten one of the most
infamous murders of the last twelve months, a cold-blooded and cowardly
execution that he had fiercely and repeatedly endorsed on his show.  I
decided to help him out...

Fallujah: Video shows US soldier killing wounded insurgent in cold
blood
by ANDREW BUNCOMBE in Washington

The US Marine Corps launched an investigation into possible war crimes
last night after video footage taken inside a mosque in Fallujah
apparently showed a Marine shooting dead an unarmed Iraqi insurgent who
had been taken prisoner.
The footage showed several Marines with a group of prisoners who were
either lying on the floor or propped against a wall of the bombed-out
building. One Marine can be heard declaring that one of the prisoners
was faking his injuries.
A series of television pool images shot by NBC shows a U.S. Marine
shooting dead a wounded and unarmed Iraqi in a Falluja mosque November
13, 2004. U.S. Marines rallied round the Marine now... <snip>...

And here is Smith's considered response...

Good advice.
The Marine was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Once again your facts and reality aren't synching up.

You dolt.  I don't think even you would be so moronic as to give any
credence to an internal investigation by the U.S. army.

BREEN DECREES:  I trust Usenet regulars will not make Leighton Smith's
life a living hell by sending his e-mail address to as many spamming
organisations as possible.

You mean the same Army that went ahead and found abuses at Abu Ghraib and
persecuted the offenders?  That Army?  Jeez, you go ahead and report the
assertion as gospel truth and deny the relevance of the copnclusion of the
investigators.  Biased much?

Leighton gives his email address on his program, for viewers with something
to say to him. It isn't a secret.

By now every spammer in the world probably knows his radio email anyway. It
isn't his private one, if any.
I expect the station has the latest technology to stop the spam.
Are you there, Leighton? We love your program!

Well, do you think the email he gives out on the program is also his private
email?

If xtra can stop spam coming to me, I'm sure a big radio station can do the
same thing.
Why do you think I wouldn't understand the program? Of course it depends on
what is being discussed.
I've said my piece on talkback and never been chucked off for not
understanding anything.
However, it takes so long to get on to the program that I now say what I
want to on newsgroups. If we have anything to say to Leighton we write
(snailmail) or email him.
If you get on his program Redbaiter you had better watch your language!

Of course I don't have any "evidence". It's common sense, if one gets the
email address the rest will.

You don't have to be a genius to find that out! All the spammers probably
know it already.  xtra removes most of it anyway.
Some of it is quite interesting, but the firms offering various goods are in
China or America. The porn is good for a laugh, though.  And it's nice to
know I am highly thought of in the wilds of Africa.

Now what do you mean by that? Do you get on his program?

Smith is trying to be an American-style right-wing shock-jock.
A sort of unrefined Redbaiter of the airwaves.....and just as worthy of
being ignored.
