US Embassy spun the line that NZ Govt "overreacted" to terrorists
Updated at 3:15pm on 22 December 2010
The United States Embassy in Wellington claimed the New Zealand Government's reaction to the passport fraud of two suspected Israeli terrorists was "too strong", and linked it with trade to Arab states.
The details have emerged in leaked US diplomatic cables from 2004.
The cables from the then US Ambassador, Charles Swindells, state that the case drew New Zealand's toughest diplomatic retaliation since the 1985 Rainbow Warrior bombing.
Mr Swindells says what he calls the "overly strong reaction" suggests the Government saw the "flap" as as an "opportunity to bolster its credibility with the Arab community".
But the current Labour leader, Phil Goff, says that the claims are absolute nonsense, and that the diplomatic ban on Israel had nothing to do with trade. He says it was put in place because a supposedly friendly country breached New Zealand's sovereignty and committed criminal acts.

The obvious lie was Mr. Swindells' demeaning the sharp work of our
security services and police by calling the detention of two
terrorists a "flap".

The mendacity is entirely by the ambassador of the country that
sponsors and protects these terrorists.

For once, the ever-appeasing Phil Goff got it right: "It was an
outrageous act by a friendly state whose agents committed crimes."

Israel fakes friendly countries' passports. Israel is no friend.

"Fantasies"? What was "fantasy" in the amended Radio Transcripts Ltd?
That the U.S. ambassador tried to make light of the fact two
terrorists were nabbed by our cops? He actually DID call this major
arrest (it absolutely outraged the Israeli government, by the way) a
"flap". It was not invented by the Radio Transcripts crowd; Mr
Swindells actually tried it on! One doubts that his masters in
Washington were as naive as you, though. They were concerned that,
once again, a (relatively) independent government had not acquiesced
and connived in the ongoing terror programme of Washington's pet rogue
state.

To alter a quote is despicable Mo. You know that it is possible to
praody an announcement, but it should always be clear to anyone at all
careful that it is a praody and not an actual quote from someone else.

It was a correction to clarify some wilful disinformation. However, I
take your point--we don't need any more Michael Moore-type distortions
from the good guys. I'll pass on your reproach to the boys and girls
at Daisycutter Sports Inc.

And NZ lets down the ANZUS/UK team over the no nukes policy.. the
difference being NZ wasn't and doesn't face an existential threat over
it's action.

yeah, amazing isn't? i remember they wanted the FBI to come and arrest
Bruce Simpson for building his cruise missile. They couldn't believe the
FBI had no jurisdiction.

Oh well, all forgiven then. Let's send a few dozen fake NZ passports to
Israel.

There's some dispute as to how much influence "Mo" has over his other
multiple personalities.
