Kerre Woodham reacts to elderly caller who dares to criticize Tony Veitch (Apr. 16, 2009)

NewstalkZB’s Kerre Woodham reacts to an elderly caller who dares to criticize her colleague Tony Veitch
On Thursday 16 April 2009, NewstalkZB sports jock Tony “Veitchy” Veitch pleaded guilty to injuring his ex-fiance with reckless disregard. Police records showed Veitch had kicked Kristin Dunne-Powell in the spine, thrown a glass of water in her face, kicked her repeatedly in the thighs, dragged her down the stairs and verbally abused her.
In spite of all this, “Veitchy” got off with a mere slap on the wrist: community service, a few months of “supervision”, and a small fine.
The general mood at NewstalkZB following his sentence was akin to carnival; NewstalkZB hosts had ridiculed and denounced Kristin Dunne-Powell round the clock, day after day for months, ever since news of the assaults broke. Veitch’s loudest defenders, and Miss Dunne-Powell’s most brutal detractors, were Larry Williams, Bruce Russell, and Kerre Woodham.
During his sports show that evening, a jubilant Willy Lose told his colleague Susan Wood on air: “This is a day of cewebwation for me!”.
After 8 p.m., nearly every one of Kerre Woodham’s callers was right behind Veitch. Then an elderly caller called CYRIL rang her up….
WOODHAM: Hello, Cyril.
CYRIL: Well I’m not behind him at all. For goodness sakes, seven and a half months community service is all he got. He could have quite easily kicked that woman in the head and done brain damage to her—-
WOODHAM: We-e-e-ell….
CYRIL: Or put her in a wheelchair for life.
WOODHAM: [coldly] Well, in which case it would have been a different sentence.
CYRIL: I beg your pardon?
WOODHAM: He would have got a different sentence.
CYRIL: Sorry, I can’t quite hear you.
WOODHAM: [testily] Oh well then, WHY RING TALKBACK if you can’t HEAR?
CYRIL: I beg your Pardon?
WOODHAM: A-a-a-arrrrggghh!
CYRIL: I’m sorry I can’t—
[She cuts him dead]
WOODHAM: [through clenched teeth] R-r-right. Hello Anne….
