Nine to Noon, 10.45 a.m.: Pretentious crap about Iowa Writers Workshop
Did anyone else hear the story at 10.45 this morning on National
Radio? Normally, it's a high quality short story (Tuesday's was an
Owen Marshall story) or a serialization of a reasonably interesting
autobiography or novel. There have been duds, of course---Patricia
Grace's utterly unconvincing fiction where she imagines she's her
uncle in the trenches in World War I was just dull beyond belief, and
there was an African story a couple of weeks ago that was sub-sub-
sophomoric in both content and execution.

That station is a natural outlet for the pretentious.
Not quite my cuppa. Chacun à son goût or somesuch applies.

This morning, I had the displeasure of hearing what I believe was
perhaps the most intellectually barren and yet pretentious fifteen
minutes of infamy I've heard on National Radio for some time---well,
it was the worst since I last heard Clive James trying to be funny and
impressive in one of his sub-sub-Alistair Cooke talks.

A woman was reading, in the most arch and affected manner imaginable,
what host Katherine Ryan announced was an "essay" about the Iowa
Writers' Workshop, and New Zealand, and Jorge Luis Borges, and
something else chosen at random. Everything seemed chosen at random,
and nothing cohered. It was, quite simply, excruciating.

Did anyone get a transcript of this horror show? It needs to see the
light....

Well, no, that's not entirely true, Fred. There certainly are some
excruciating programmes and some irritating hosts and guests, but the
standard on Radio New Zealand is generally high----much higher than
anything on commercial radio.

But that reading yesterday---I've since found out the writer was named
Sarah Miller, and she has apparently "won awards" for her poetry and
short story writing---was execrable.

BBC Radio 4 is my mainstay radio listening, but thanks for the advice.

Or just retue to the Concert Programme. Music for adults, and hardly
any yap-yap.

Jim Mora is however deserving of some praise and much sympathy.
Earlier today I heard him try to interview two bandmembers about to do
a three concert farewell tour. He was bored, the bandmembers were
boring. Excruciatingly so. I've no idea how long the episode lasted. I
just hope Jim's OK.

Apparently, the most excruciating (and the funniest) example of an
awkward Jim Mora interview came a couple of years ago when he
interviewed the Irish actor from Black Books. The guy was morose and
totally uncooperative and even the voluble and friendly Jim was at a
loss. I've only heard of this Great Encounter; has anyone perchance go
a transcript or a link?
