In his daily 4:35 chat to Newstalk ZB "Drivetime" host Larry Williams,
sports commentator Doug Golightly generally seems an affable kind of
chap. His fans (and detractors) know that there is, of course, always
a slight edge in the air with Doug: you never know when he's going to
suddenly "flip out" and start ranting insanely or, more likely, make
some bizarrely untenable assertion. On Wednesday's chat, Doug was at
his vintage best (or should that be "worst"?)

On this day, what is exercising Doug is the story that Japan is
favoured to win the 2011 Rugby World Cup hosting rights ahead of New
Zealand. Let's face it, he gravely informs Williams, New Zealand will
never host another World Cup until we get a super-stadium capable of
holding 75-80,000 spectators. It's time, reckons Doug, to expand
North Harbour Stadium!

Whatever we have to do, avers Doug, we have to stop JAPAN from winning
the rights. The very thought of it!

DOUG: [gravely] Old soldiers will be spinning in their graves. There
just hasn't been enough education about what the Japanese did in the
war.
WILLIAMS: [bemused] But what are you going to do --- ban them for
centuries?
DOUG: [solemnly] No, but an apology before the kick-off would be good.
FACT: Doug Golightly has not called for Germany to apologise before
next year's soccer World Cup kicks off. Neither has he called for any
apologies from any British teams before the Six Nations kicks off this
week, nor from any Australian teams in any sport at all. Both the UK
and Australia are deeply complicit in the war crimes committed in Iraq
by the Coalition of the Killing, yet Doug seems to have turned a blind
eye to that.

No blind eye for the sins of Robert Mugabe, however! Doug, an
outspoken supporter of racially selected South African sporting teams
throughout the apartheid era, was one of the loudest of those
screaming for the Zimbabwe cricket team to be boycotted: "Playing
cricket with Zimbabwe is lending support for Mugabe, that BLACK PIG!
No WAY should we be encouraging that BLACK PIG!"

Which might well be true, of course. Yet it seems rather odd that
Doug's passionate expressions of censure should be restricted to the
poor old Japanese, who have not invaded anyone for more than three
generations, and Zimbabwe.
