Larry Williams' attack on Dunne-Powell comes unstuck (July 14, 2009)

Larry Williams' attack on Dunne-Powell comes unstuck
Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Yet more slyly subversive activity from a woman on the Radio Network!
We showed yesterday how chatty pop psychologist Sara Chatwin deftly
eviscerated a nonplussed Murray Deaker on his own show on Sunday,
effectively saying Deaker and his callers were grumblers and moaners
who actually know very little about football.
Now this morning (Tuesday) another NewstalkZB host has been openly
challenged by an in-house “expert”. Veitch-supporter Larry Williams no
doubt thought he could rely on regular NewstalkZB personality Wendyl
Nissen to follow the NewstalkZB station policy in regard to Kristen
Dunne-Powell. That policy is: attack her, denigrate her, defame her,
question her honesty and motivation, trivialise her injuries.
Initially, however, Williams seems to signal an interesting
development in his teaser for the Nissen interview...
7:29 a.m.
LARRY WILLIAMS: Coming up after the break, Tony Veitch’s VICTIM had
her say on television last night. So was it any good?
What?!!?!?!?? A NewstalkZB host referring to the victim of a violent
crime as a victim! What’s going on?!??!?!? Well, nothing, as it turns
out. After the break, Williams is back in harassment mode. And no
doubt Wendyl Nissen will support him. Right? Sadly for Larry Williams,
Wendly Nissen was about to defect from the party line....
In her opening remarks, Nissen follows the standard NewstalkZB method
of crude sarcasm. After that, though, the target of her acerbic
comments is not Kristen Dunne-Powell, but the people who hound her.
People like Larry Williams...
7:41 a.m.
LARRY WILLIAMS: Did we learn anything worthwhile from last night’s
interview with Kristen Dunne-Powell on TV3? Wendyl Nissen is here to
discuss it. What did you think of this, Wendyl?
WENDYL NISSEN: It was a very traditional type of interview, Larry. It
was very like the kind of interview we used to do when I was the
editor of Woman’s Day. It was, like, okay, Here’s my house, Here’s my
family, Here’s my tears, Here’s my pain and anguish---now go away and
leave me alone.
WILLIAMS: Yeah, but did it do any GOOD?
WENDYL NISSEN: [icily] Yeah, but that’s Veitch’s problem isn’t it. She
is the victim---let’s not forget that.
WILLIAMS: Hrrrrrumph.
WENDYL NISSEN: It’s very hard to pick up the paper or turn on the
radio every day and see and hear LIES and INNUENDO about yourself. You
just want to ring up and say---
WILLIAMS: Hrrrumph. Okayyyyyy. But there’s a question, isn’t there,
about who initiated the plea bargain.
WENDYL NISSEN: [flaring up angrily] See there you go again!
WILLIAMS: I’d just like to know who initiated the plea bargain. Both
sides had PR agents.
WENDYL NISSEN: Well, Veitch used to run to the media at the drop of a
hat. I know that several of the media people he used to talk to have
had enough of him. And let’s not forget that Kristin Dunne-Powell was
the victim. Good on her, I think!
WILLAMS: [nonplussed, surly] That’s Wendyl Nissen.
“Larry Williams---he loves asking hard questions!”
