Andrew ("Slobber") Saveloy ejected from Blues training session (Mar. 10, 2004)

10 March 2004
Newstalk ZB, The Paul Holmes Breakfast.
Listeners to Newstalk ZB will know that every weekday morning at 6:25
a.m., breakfast host Paul Holmes has a chat about sports with the oily
sports "journalist"Andrew ("Slobber") Saveloy.  Actually, "chat" is
hardly the word for it; perhaps "ritual slaughter" is a better
description for the way Holmes runs verbal rings around the
slow-witted, ponderous Saveloy.
This morning, however, Holmes goes easy on his pinguid punching-bag.
You see, Holmes is feeling all warm and positive about his TV item,
the previous night, on the New Zealand cricket team.  He can't say
enough about the men in white....
HOLMES:  After all the PRECIOUSNESS associated with rugby players last
year, it's nice to be associated with intelligent people who can hold
a NORMAL conversation.
SAVELOY:  Don't start me on THAT!  After being asked to move from
Blues training at Eden Park yesterday.  Errrrrrmmmm....
HOLMES:  Hey, tell me about it!
SAVELOY:  [stoically]  Well, errrrrmmmmm, it's their prerogative....
.................................................................................................................................
BREEN COMMENTS:  Three cheers for the Blues! If only more New Zealand
football teams put their foot down and stopped the likes of Saveloy
having any access, we would get some decent coverage of the game.  The
fat creep has also been known to haunt the Chiefs' dressing rooms; one
wonders how long it will be before THAT organisation gets its act
together and bans him.
Saveloy's "errrrrrmmmm" count this morning: 14

He's right you know, it is a word....

Two oily's.....how oily is that? And he's in a dressing room?

I used to work with both of them and I agree that both are twats. Paul is
incredibly smart but knows nothing about sport. Whilst Sav isn't smart and
knows nothing about sport.
Should stick to commentating NZ womens tennis tournaments. It's his level.

You seem to have a hatred of over-weight people Mowissey. It seems the
greatest insult you can inflict is to call someone fat.Did a fat person bash
you or something, or just sit on your face?
BTW I am not fat, yet I notice your fat bashing remarks all the time.Do you
think over-weight people have less brains or something?

It pains me that I might be remotely in agreement with Mowwissey, but I
do think that fat people are lazy. I'm not a fan of them. The fuckers
take up too much room. They place an enormous demand on our health
system, money better saved by giving me a tax cut.

Blah blah blah blah.
This is the place where I give other posters advice about just
ignoring completely unreadable twats.
Call me naively optimistic, but maybe one day he'll get the message
and save us all the trouble of even ignoring him.

Wrong.  I do not automatically hate a fat person.  He has to earn it.

Your perception of this writer (moi) as a "fat basher" is flawed.  An
extended Google search on my name shows that, in over a year of
posting, I have used the word "fat" a total of 38 times.   Hardly
qualifies as "fat bashing remarks all the time".
Look carefully now.  The only people  for whom I have used the word
"fat" pejoratively are as follows....
1.)  Bernard Manning....undeniably fat, disgusting racist "comedian".
2.)  Tony Blankley.... appallingly fat Washington Times columnist.
Extreme right winger, pathological hater of Arabs, chickenhawk.  Could
serve as a double for Bernard Manning.
3.)  Rush Limbaugh..... undeniably overweight, extreme right wing
radio host, drug freak and chickenhawk.  Could fill in for Blankley or
Manning, if he ever learned to speak with a vulgar, low class Limey
accent.
4.)  Phil (Phat Man) Gifford.... bearded, undeniably fat buffoon.
Another Radio Sport affront to New Zealand sports fans.
5.)  Andrew (Slobber) Saveloy.... sleek, overweight, idiotic sports
commentator and, shamefully, a fall-guy for Paul Holmes.
6.)  Redbaiter....  appallingly overweight, overwrought nz.general
personality and chickenhawk.
And that's it!  I detest some of the above people, but their fatness
is merely incidental.

Oh good Lord, Rick.  Concentrate, will you?  Saveloy is a RADIO
broadcaster.  He's unlistenable.  How can he be "unreadable"?  Do pay
attention, old man.

Count yourself lucky, Rick. You live in Western Australia, far from
the reach of the fat idiot and his Radio Sport colleagues, who are
nearly all just as dire.

Yes.  Yes, he WILL, Rick!  If we keep complainining about him and
criticising him in fora like this one, he will eventually be fired.
Join us, Rick, and let the fat bastard - sorry Tilly! - know you are

You can be just as far from their reach if you learn to turn the radio
off.
Get an adult to show you how.

Mr Breen
Mainstream journalism is crap and has been ever since people decided
that selling sensational stories was more important than attempting to
present the facts in a balanced manner.  Most of us regretfully
understand this and ignore it.  Why can't you?
I could accept your whinging if you were going to do something about
journalistic integrity (go start a petition or something) but if you're
just going to whinge then you're just contributing to the noise.
Peter.

I understand your objection.  However, unless you have been in this
country over the last five or six years, you really will not have any
appreciation of just how dire our sports journalists are.  Of course,
dismal, gullible, uninformed journalists are a plague everywhere.  But
I am not aware of any journalists anywhere else writing, and saying,
the kind of crap that New Zealand rugby "journalists" do as a matter
of routine.

I reject your terminology.  My criticism of these fools is consistent
and backed up by rafts of evidence.  Most people in this country do
indeed merely whinge about the standard of rugby reporting; I
carefully analyse just WHY it is so dismal.  I will not have you
writing off my serious criticisms as "whinging".

Interestingly enough, this writer (i.e., moi) has indeed attracted the
fleeting attention of one of New Zealand's outstanding broadcasters,
viz. one Leighton Smith.  You can read all about the encounter by

Yes it is.  Althought I notice that, no doubt at the behest of his
unfortunate family, he has changed it to Andrew Saville.

Is that a pout I see?  :o)
OK, fair enough - "whinging" is harsh.  I'm annoyed.  You going on about
NZ broadcasters is annoying me (and others, if responses to your posts
are anything to go by) as much as you appear to be annoyed by the
journalists.
You are suffering.  Need we suffer also?

In what way do you think posting your criticisms of NZ journalism to
RSRU is helping then?  If anything, writing to TVNZ or the various news
papers might seem... actually constructive.  By posting here, at best
your preaching to the choir, at worst you're being repetitive and dull.
Peter
