Professor Farmer seems to endorse Halberstam's framing of the U.S. destruction of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia as an "entanglement". If so, then that word has been invested with an entirely new meaning, and we can now speak of the Iraqi regime's entanglement with Halabja in 1988, the Janjaweed militia's "entanglement" with the villagers of Darfur, and the Israeli regime's "entanglement" with Gaza and the West Bank.
Professor Dershowitz's exhortation to read Philip Roth's latest novel is excellent advice. After that, they should read Roth's novel The Human Stain, which was published in 2000. It's about an honorable and respected academic being hounded out of his job by a merciless, shrieking fanatic.
