Preliminary comment by MORRISSEY BREEN....
If Steve Tew and Todd Blackadder were genuinely appalled by the racist
taunts on NewstalkZB, Radio Sport and on the internet, then they would
stop pretending that the offenders are "anonymous" and "faceless". The
fact of the matter is that the instigators and provocoteurs in this
shabby affair are not at all unknown; they are all employees of The
Radio Network, i.e., Murray Deaker, Tony Veitch, Paul Holmes and
Leighton Smith.
Blackadder, Tew and Pat Lam are all highly intelligent men, and they
know perfectly well who the people responsible are. Blackadder hints
at it with his generalized admonition of the media: "There are times
when we shouldn't say and print the stuff that's being said."
It's a real pity that Todd Blackadder, Steve Tew and Pat Lam all seem
to lack the moral courage to name those people primarily responsible
for this outrage.

Racial taunts against Pat Lam 'appalling' - Tew

The head of New Zealand rugby has condemned racist comments about
Blues' coach Pat Lam as "appalling".
Current and former players are also speaking out in support of Lam,
who broke down yesterday while talking about abusive messages directed
at his family.
"I find the whole ability for people to hide behind social media and
be faceless, and criticise people personally ... is just a very
disappointing part of our country," Steve Tew said today.
Blues management is refusing to release the comments that brought Lam
to tears yesterday and has deleted all traces from its website and
social media pages.
It is not the first time racism has caused a ruckus off the field.
Andy Haden resigned as World Cup ambassador after claiming the
Crusaders had a Polynesian player quota.
And Samoa's controversial World Cup tweeter Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu
tweeted that while comments about Lam are "disgusting", they are "not
surprising".
He now plays for a team in England, where rugby players star in high-
profile anti-racism campaigns.
But Tew denies there is a problem.
"We have a zero tolerance for any racial abuse or activity, and that
goes without saying," he said.
Former Auckland and Tongan international Willie Lose told Close Up
while there has been some racism in rugby "for decades" he does not
think it is an epidemic.
"I think that it's a very small group to be honest," Lose told Close
Up.
"The part that's disappointed me is because I went to school with Pat
and I know Pat personally, is that he's taken it onboard. He should
have just removed himself and talked to people that mentor him."
However, Auckland University Professor Gehan Gunasekara, who
specialises in information privacy, says while New Zealanders have a
"holier than thou" attitude when it comes to racism, the reality is
different.
"Social media has exposed the dark side and it has exposed the fact
that we are just as bigoted and racist as anybody else," he said.
Gunasekara said one option for controlling it is regulating social
media, but doing that while preserving free speech would be difficult.
Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder says coaches of under-performing teams
need to expect harsh criticism, but using racial taunts is
"disgraceful".
He says media organisations should not be giving any airtime to such
comments.
"There are times when we shouldn't say and print the stuff that's
being said. There's no need for it," Blackadder said.
