O.J. Simpson’s Visit to Oxford

* Anent “British Polite to Simpson but Skeptical” (May 15), it was interesting to note that the majority of demonstrators during the Oxford Union event were American exchange students and tourists. Indeed, despite the yearlong media focus on O.J., the average Brit, and a large number of Oxonians, know very little about the O.J. saga.
Oxonians have never really embraced political correctness, which is viewed xenophobically as an American export. As such, the post-trial focus on O.J.'s spousal abuse/domestic violence history does not have a marked impact on Oxford, which is still a male-dominated, above-the-salt and pro-establishment institution.
O.J. delivered a highly convincing spiel, addressed to an audience that is objective, intellectual and untainted with media biases. In Oxford, arguments and logic count more than biased preconceptions.
The insinuation that O.J.'s talk was just a means to improve his image in the U.S. is poppycock. As an old-boy member of the Oxford Union, I know too well that having Simpson in the term card of events is mainly a means of increasing the membership roster.

* I am appalled over Oxford University inviting Simpson to speak! This person may have ducked out on a double-murder charge, but he is still a proven wife-beater. Are people losing all sense of taste and caring?

* Re “IRS Files Lien on Simpson’s Home and Possessions,” May 14:
Simpson made $200,000 signing sports cards in jail, $1 million for his book, $3 million for a video tour of his mansion, and he owes $685,248 in back taxes for 1994.
My husband and I pay our taxes religiously, work as a physician and a professor, respectively, and I imagine, if we had a tour of our house, we’d have to pay people to see it! Something is wrong with this picture!
