What counts is what National polls, not what its leader polls. John Armstrong has not done any proper analysis of the situation. OK Andy Little was down too in leadership polls, but he neglected to mention his party was badly down too – it was the party’s poor polling, not Andy’s poor polling that led to a last minute leadership change.
Simon Bridge’s polling can be explained by three things:
1. He is going through a bad patch with the Jami incident. It will be forgotten nearer the next election.
2. He is leader of the opposition, not PM, so does not have nearly as much limelight as Jacinda.
3. The poll could be suspect. It would be interesting what other polling companies come up with.
If the media collectively chose to, the media could easily drive up Simon’s poll up 20% and Jacinda’s down.
The National MPs (who choose the leader) would be daft to force a leadership change on the strength of this 7% result. What counts for them is the how National polled – it was a very respectable figure given current circumstances.
Also bear in mind that MSM would just love to see blood on the floor and some journos will try and prod National in that direction.

Another hit job on National by stuff this morning. Saying some people in National “pored scorn” on JLR. I thought National were defending themselves against obvious lies. The corruption accusation comes to mind. The media will never report favourably about the right wing. They see left wing politics as the position of the thinker and the noble – wanting to help the poor. They fail to see that the right wing are these people too.

It certainly does show that we need someone with a modicum of integrity in charge, it’s just a shame we have to wait until the next election for that to happen.
