Victim No. 3: Kerre Woodham

In 2009, NewstalkZzzzzzB diva Kerre Woodham was busy, along with her colleagues like Larry Williams, Bruce Russell and Leighton Smith, pouring scorn on Kristin Dunne-Powell and supporting Miss Dunne-Powell’s assailant, Tony Veitch. She also found time in her schedule to watch Mrs Leanne Cameron and her family being interviewed on television following the risibly light sentence handed out to the knife-killer of her fifteen year old son. Kerre Woodham decided that such a display of grief was unseemly, and she used her Sunday Herald column to deliver a stern lecture to the distraught woman. The folks here at Daisycutter Sports Inc. were among the many who read Woodham’s column with dismay; we decided to do something about it. Thus was born the character Kerre ohoWmad, who would drive Woodham to displays of volcanic anger, first on Usenet….

    Firstly with all the self promotion I thought you were going to announce an Autobiography.

    Clayton Weatherston. Probably the best con job in media and political history. Still resulting in idiots who got sucked in repeating the con. Clayton went to the doctor “Help somethings wrong”. “Take this mind altering drug. It will make things all better” says the doctor. A month later he kills Sophie in a manner only associated with crazy people. “Doctor can you check if he’s ok” say the police. “Oops wrong medication” says the doctor. “Let’s use this to get rid of provocation laws” says Judith Collins. “Let’s use this for or man hating DV agenda” say the media. “Let’s help” say the defence lawyers. “Let’s do a bullshit provacation story, put the patient on the stand.” “Let’s not plead guilty and present a diminished responsibility case.” winks his lawyer to the prosecutor.

    Yes people are dumb.

    What is it about the Pihema Cameron\Bruce Emery thing which seems to so aggravate you.
    You have bought the issue up on here so many times I have lost count and you are still harping on about it.
    People get killed in NZ quite regularly and I could point to lots of cases where justice was probably not done but unfortunately imperfect systems give imperfect results and that’s just the way it is whether you or I like it or not.
    Sometimes you have to move on and let things go.

      What disturbed me, and many other people, was the way that the “Sensible Sentencing Trust” and certain sections of the media—the Herald and NewstalkZB especially—immediately vilified the victim. It wasn’t simply a kneejerk reaction, it carried on for months, and months.

      People get killed in NZ quite regularly and I could point to lots of cases where justice was probably not done but unfortunately imperfect systems give imperfect results and that’s just the way it is whether you or I like it or not.

      Fair comment, my friend. This case was different, however: I had never heard such organized and comprehensive ridiculing and damnation of a victim of a crime before. Not in this country.

      Sometimes you have to move on and let things go.

      I agree. I rarely talk about this terrible case any more—but the publication of a piece praising the organization that led that terrible campaign was a provocation I could not ignore.
