Ridiculous item on Radio New Zealand National this morning, concerning
the retirement of New Zealand soccer captain Ryan "Plugger" Nelsen.
The script obediently adhered to the Radio New Zealand management
directive that soccer be called "football", and soccer players
"footballers"---despite the fact that nobody except obedient
newsreaders calls it anything other than soccer.
I flicked the poor slaves the following reminder....

Ryan Nelsen New Zealand's finest "footballer"? You are joking, surely.
Dear Simon,
Your item on Ryan Nelsen's retirement contained two highly questionable assertions:
1.) that Ryan Nelsen was "a star at the 2010 World Cup". Even at his best, Nelsen was an honest plugger, the very antithesis of a star player.
2.) that Ryan Nelsen was "the best footballer New Zealand has ever produced". That will come as a surprise to anyone who has seen Michael Jones, or Daniel Carter, or Richie McCaw.
When will Radio New Zealand stop this ridiculous practice of calling soccer "football", in defiance of common use?
Yours sincerely,
