Racist Sportscaster Watch (No. 1: CHRIS MIRAMS) May 16, 2004

Racist Sportscaster Watch (No. 1: CHRIS MIRAMS)
by MORRISSEY BREEN, Daisycutter Sports
This fellow is less known as a football commentator than as a boxing
"analyst". Our friend Kees Echo calls him "clapped out", and anyone
who has read his useless book about the Warriors (it's called
BELEAGUERED; you can find it in the 49 cent bin at any bookshop) would
no doubt agree.
However, this writer (moi) has Mirams pinned for something worse than
merely being a bore: he is a racist.
Now, of course, that's nothing new in New Zealand sports "journalism".
A few years ago, DAVID KIRK (incredibly, a Rhodes Scholar) wrote a
learned piece in the Sunday Star Times, pompously expressing his
"concern" at the number of Polynesians in top football teams.  He
looked ahead in his intelligent Rhodes Scholar fashion and could only
see the horrific prospect of MORE dark-skinned players in the All
Blacks. "This is not a future I want for the game," he wrote,
gravely. He has repeated this nonsense several times since.
Kirk's shallow little piece incurred the wrath of many, including
Wellington broadcaster Ken Laban, a Samoan, who denounced the whining
little creep as "a racist".
NZ Rugby World editor JOHN MATHESON wrote a notoriously smug, racist
piece of crap in the November 2001 edition of his magazine,
ludicrously entitled "Where have all the white players gone?" in which
he opined that all the darkies in football were frightening off white
kids like he used to be.
Of course, Newstalk ZB/Radio Sport stalwart MURRAY DEAKER is a
constant source of inflammatory racist comment. (Read more on this
obnoxious bully in an upcoming instalment in this series.)
Radio Sport listeners will no doubt recall MARTIN DEVLIN recycling
racial nonsense about black athletes, and GRAHAM HILL raving about
"field niggers" and "house niggers", with no trace of redeeming irony.
Mirams, though, is less shrill, and more (apparently) measured  than
most radio sporting "pundits", so it came as something of a nasty
surprise to hear him coming on like a cut-price version of Murray
Deaker on Monday afternoon, as he chatted on Newstalk ZB to Larry
Williams.
Mirams was hot under the collar about the Crusaders' Chris Jack being
hit high and concussed by Wellington Hurricanes No. 8 Jerry Collins on
Friday night. Condemning the hit as a "blindsiding", Mirams then said
that white mothers would not want their children playing the game when
they saw Polynesians running amok like this. "This is a taste of
Porirua street life coming into the Super 12", snarled Mirams, "and
frankly we don't need it!"
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not recall Mirams ever writing
even one word condemning the ultra-violent Richard Loe when he was
gouging and forearm-jolting his way into infamy a decade ago.  And of
course, he never ever wrote anything like: "This is a taste of North
Canterbury farm life coming into football, and frankly we don't need
it!"
Neither did Mirams write a word of condemnation of white player Alan
Whetton after he had viciously stomped on Stephen Bachop (a Samoan) in
an infamous incident in the early 1990s.
What Mirams means when he selectively condemns "Porirua street life"
is "we don't want these Polynesians playing the game." Mirams was
less worried about the VIOLENCE of Collins' tackle than the fact that
Collins is a SAMOAN.
That is what bothers Mirams, who remains silent about white players'
violence.

"Paranoia"?  So Mirams is not singling out Polynesians for criticism?
I'm imagining it, am I?

Ahhhhh!  We have a SCHOLAR in our midst!  All those cretinous posts
(like the classic where he insists that England have not actually WON
the World Cup) have been an elaborate smokescreen.  He's actually an
academic, the most serious and well-informed commentator since.... oh,
since Professor Murray Deaker.
A weekend's serious cogitating and he's managed to tease out a "common
theme", which only his natural decency and instinctive delicacy
forbids him from actually coming out and stating.

No, how about  YOU provide an example of Mirams condemning "North
Cantervbury farm life" for Richard Loe's behaviour or "Remuera street
life"  for Whetton's violence.
...<Snip more racial hatred>....
BREEN COMMENTS:  You are making a fool out of yourself.  Bigotry like
Mirams is expressing, and you are endorsing, is a blight on the game.

gruffydd I an curious about this exchange of views. Is an incident violent or illegal ONLY when the person concerned has been seen by the officials, and dealt with accordingly. does the 'unseen' activity not count?

What Mirams meant was quite clear, and you know it.  I can only
presume that you endorse his racist nonsense.

Rebut it?  You've provided nothing to rebut.  You can't, of course.

You understand perfectly well Mirams' clumsy coded racism.  You
obviously agree with his racist standpoint.  Why don't you just come
clean about your Deakerist views, instead of being mealy-mouthed?

Because you are an Australian, and know little or nothing about New
Zealand culture, you just don't understand what Mirams meant.  Mr
Scebe, by contrast, certainly does understand exactly what Mirams
meant.
You're out of your depth.  Again.

You're right, Morewussy. It doesn't take much from you to make me bored,
that's for sure.
